How to Play EMU GOLF
EMU GOLF is played like a normal golf game, except it is done in a driving range setting. Emu Golf may be adapted to any set of golf rules such as PGA, LPGA or your local club rules.
Course: The EMU GOLF course is 300 yards long by 100 yards wide. There are yardage markers running vertically and horizontally on the course. The yardages are printed on the vertical markers. The horizontal markers are spaced 10 yards apart. These markers enable the golfer to determine the approximate distance of each shot taken on the course.
The course is comprised of two playing areas:
- Tee Box /Fairway - for all shots up to 30 yards from the green. Adjacent to the tee box is an area for fairway rough and bunker shots.
- Short Game/Green - for all shots/putts within 30 yards of the centre of the green, comprised also of fairway, rough and bunker.
Game Cards: The golfer uses a system of cards, each being a scale map of a golf hole. Each booklet of cards comprises an 18-hole course with four par 3s, four par 5s and 10 par 4s. The 18 cards are placed inside a special cover. The top cover has a vertical target line cut in the centre matching the vertical markers on the course. A series of small holes run horizontally on each side of the target line matching the horizontal markers on the course. The golfer places a pencil mark through the cover onto the hole card below to record the approximate distance and location of the ball for each shot taken.
Getting Started: Tee up a ball in a tee box. Lift the cover of the card booklet to reveal the first hole to be played. After reviewing the hole on the card select a club for your first shot.
Tee Shot: Tee off and watch to see where the ball lands. You must then “declare” the approximate vertical and horizontal location of the ball. (Example: “200 yards vertical. 10 yards right.”) Place a pencil mark through the hole on the cover nearest to where the ball lands. Lift the cover to reveal where on the card, and, therefore the course, the ball is located.
Second Shot: Carefully tear the perforated card from the booklet. Move the card so the first pencil mark appears through the hole at the bottom of the cover. Select your club for the next shot after using the distance markers on the cover to determine the desired target line and distant. The card identifies the lie - fairway, rough or sand - from which the shot is taken. The player drops a ball in the appropriate area and then takes the shot. (No penalty strokes are assessed for inbound drops, only if shots land out-of-bounds or in a hazard.)
< 30 yards to the Pin: When there is <30 yards remaining to the pin, as identified on the card, place the ball in the Short Game area at the remaining distance to the pin in either the fairway, rough, sand or on the green. Note: There may be other golfers in the short game area. The ball farthest from the pin is played first until all players have putted out. The shots and putts taken in the short game area are marked on the card and it is then moved to the bottom of the deck.
Holes 2 - 18: Repeat the process described above for each of the 18 holes until the game is finished.
Course Scoring Record: Write the score from each hole on the Course Scoring Record found in the back of EMU GOLF booklet. The Course Scoring Record enables you to establish your Emu golf handicap. After you play 10 games of EMU GOLF your average score and handicap is established. Your handicap can change because it is calculated as the average of the scores of your last 10 games. This enables you to track your handicap and monitor your progress.
